| April 2003: release of the JMX 12" "1.2. AB" (3 remixes + original version) Label: Life Enhancing Audio (n.e.w.s.)
Single culled from the JMX "Parbleu" full length, with dub artist Tikiman who usually fronts for the Basic Channel offshoot Rhythm & Sound. Deep with an aura of Caribbean spice to it and pressed on 180g vinyl. (nrgmusic.com) Excellent as Tiki always is..... (G-Stone, Richard Dorfmeister - A) Original is best for me. Collaborating with Berlin-based singer/guitarist Tikiman, vocalist Angelique Willkie, MC Koor and DJ Donotask, Aerts delves headfirst into styles such as funk, dancehall, reggae, hip hop, blues and jazz, offering up some interesting and cleverly arranged takes on these genres and adding his own range of personal and personable flourishes. Nice stuff. Without me" gaat, leuke track. (Electronixx - B) Roots music, and that of a Caribbean lilt in particular, has provided the major influence on Aerts quarter-century as an artist. This is amply demonstrated throughout Parleus´ fourteen, blues guitar-soaked, and languid, reggae-shaped offerings. It´s the guest apperances and Aerts less-is-more approach, though, that grant this album authenticity and requisite West Indian warmth. (iDJ - UK) July 2002: release of the JMX 12" and cds "Tikisong" on the Life Enhancing Audio label (n.e.w.s.) "Tikisong" feat. Tikiman (click here) is taken from the forthcoming JMX album. JMX vinyl "3" fusebox # FB018The track "Big E" is built around a very mean midtempo rhythm section with cockpit flashes, weird sound bits and a funky guitar. Under the influence of dj Donotask, "Soul Go Electro" goes into a new electro direction. A bit minimal but with very danceable beats over which you'll find some distorted sounds. On "Resistance" Jean-Marie introduces a new name in the JMX project. It's singer Angélique Willkie, who surprises us with a short rap in classic poet style. The music is downtempo and jazzy. The fourth track "Help!" brings you back on the dance floor. It starts with a fat bass keeping company with some scats and fx creating a psycho bluesy mood. A lowdown urban swamp trip containing a sample of groove master Chico Hamilton's "These are the Dues". media comments: ... '3' is the magic number. (Nl - Muziekkrant Oor 1998) ...there's some serious talent at play here... ... each track rubs against the grain of normality. Deviant and different. (UK - Muzik 1998) JMX vinyl "2" fusebox # FB014"Tremol" is built around a deep bass-line and by way of an old skool sample and some wicked funky guitar, this is the main dance floor track. Also old skool but from a different background are the Corsican singers that style the mood for "Corse". Besides their singing, the guitar makes an immediate impact with a dirty bluesy intro that evolves into a deep and moody vibe.
"250 BPM Freestyle" is a 9 minutes epic beginning as a minimalist and abstract tune, but via a mass of jazz flashes it turns into a freejazz and scratch orgy. The opening track of this FUSEBOX release is the more than comfortable flow of "Wow Ze Wow" in which JMX uses 'Can'-like electronics alongside Transkit's dubwise-beat-head overload of sounds. The next exciting track is called "Popsz", where an 'old skool' rhythmbox collides with a Brazilian flavoured drumkit and dj Donotask's scratches really project things into orbit. Track 3: a truly awesome galaxy of nineties scratch 'n blues which ultimately evolves into the slow grinding groove of their mystic funkster "Yep". Gently spoken but with a ferocious edge. |
